A lecture, last month from Thierry Garcin, a commentator on the French Radio, boasted my interest in world affairs. We listened daily to world news; perhaps we may tender a soft ear to these world occurrences. As I am quite keen on world affairs, I need to document more on the subject. With the internet, it is possible and convenient to read the worldwide media there on.

Much like a jig saw, the small pieces of news diffused everyday fit in a larger frame that in time draws the world wide trends. More so, in the globalised economies of different countries and the speed of transmission of news, geopolitical events and for that matter any large events affect any country fast. Thus an entrepreneur cannot turn a deaf ear to world news and needs to constantly updated and analyse the impact of ourselves.

As we are not on the fore front of world economics, we have the time and more interestingly the advance knowledge of seeing the impact of world happenings reaching our shore. We saw few months ago, the impact of the financial crisis and its delayed effect on us. The crunch on world travel and its repercussions on Tourism are now felt.

I have to deplore the reaction time of us Mauritians to deal with these situations. I must admit that in the case of the tourism sector, the industry reacted reasonably well. A smart operator will thus be able to bank on the slot of the changing time to maximise on his profits. I must admit that I was not smart enough to review my portfolio of investment the last time to minimise my book lost.

The wish and deployment of China in building their infra structure of their country in the last decade has put on pressure on the price on building material, petroleum products, coal and even shipping chartering. As a businessman, the strategy deployed on your market is different depending the way you perceive the trend of the market. In a recession, whilst demand is on a decrease and the prices are going up, the entrepreneur needs to readjust his actions. As recently as 2years ago, an entrepreneur who was in building material in Mauritius, was in a euphoric expanding market with the depression in prices of materials. It was possibly to maximise his profits in turning around his stock fast. The global scene has suddenly changed now, a quick readjustment is required.

At long last I have got the mobile phone that suits my needs.

I was delighted to be delivered last Saturday, the mobile with the features that I require without breaking my purse. First of all this new mobile saves me the trouble of having to carry two phones.

I have two SIM S as I use two numbers and keep my personal and more private calls from the professional one. I suppose it is the practice for a number of you. Some may even have one number which is on account of the company and another one for one’s own.

I have now access to two different service providers: one EMTEL and the other Mauritius Telecom on the same phone. Have you ever been stuck when one of the service providers is not functioning properly in a particular area of the country?

The billing for the calls made from a service provider to another recipient of another company is more expensive and besides the service level across service providers are different.

I have been on the lookout for a Dual SIM cards for months. The offer was more expensive that having two separate phones. This new Mi323, though not as performing as the expensive versions is good enough for me. I can afford the 3975 rupees from My shop, it is just great.

Le premier jour de la fête des pains sans levain, où l’on immolait l’agneau
pascal, les disciples de Jésus lui disent : « Où veux-tu que nous allions
faire les préparatifs pour ton repas pascal ? »
Il envoie deux disciples : « Allez à la ville ; vous y rencontrerez un
homme portant une cruche d’eau. Suivez-le.
Et là où il entrera, dites au propriétaire : ‘Le maître te fait dire : Où
est la salle où je pourrai manger la Pâque avec mes disciples ? ‘
Il vous montrera, à l’étage, une grande pièce toute prête pour un repas.
Faites-y pour nous les préparatifs. »
Les disciples partirent, allèrent en ville ; tout se passa comme Jésus le
leur avait dit ; et ils préparèrent la Pâque.
Pendant le repas, Jésus prit du pain, prononça la bénédiction, le rompit,
et le leur donna, en disant : « Prenez, ceci est mon corps. »
Puis, prenant une coupe et rendant grâce, il la leur donna, et ils en
burent tous.
Et il leur dit : « Ceci est mon sang, le sang de l’Alliance, répandu pour
la multitude.
Amen, je vous le dis : je ne boirai plus du fruit de la vigne, jusqu’à ce
jour où je boirai un vin nouveau dans le royaume de Dieu. »
Après avoir chanté les psaumes, ils partirent pour le mont des Oliviers.

Aujourd’hui la liturgie de l’Eglise nous conduit à La Fête-Dieu ou Solennité du Saint Sacrement du Corps et du Sang du Christ. Autrefois à Maurice cette fête était célébrée en grande pompe : c’était même un jour férié. Enfant, je me voyais en grand habit du Dimanche, pour assister aux offices et la procession qui précédait la grande messe et la grande bénédiction du Saint Sacrement. Les abords de la ville ou passait le cortège de Chrétiens étaient ornés de fleurs pour signifier la fête et surtout pour témoigner de la foi chrétienne aux autres qui ne sont pas. Les notables de la ville avaient le privilège de tenir les cordons du dé qui abritait le Saint Sacrement.

La fête des pains sans levain des juifs a été transformée par les chrétiens en une fête du pain d’amour. En instituant le sacrement de l’Eucharistie, la célébration du don de son corps et de son sang dans la communion du pain et du vin, Jésus nous laisse et livre son héritage d’amour partagé. La messe n’est pas seulement une commémoration de cet instant de la vie de Jésus, pour nous croyants, à chaque messe, il y a trans-matérialisation. Nous recevons à chaque communion, la substance de l’amour de notre Seigneur, son don de son corps et de son sang livrés pour nous sauver. Dans la lecture de l’exode ce matin, référence était faite aux sacrifices animales de Moise de l’ancien testament, plus jamais aucun sacrifice est maintenant requises car notre Seigneur, dans son amour infini, lui-même s’est offert en l’ultime sacrifice.

Je prends conscience encore plus, à cette fête d’aujourd’hui du cadeau qu’IL nous laisse : un cadeau d’Amour inépuisable : ce pain qui nous nourrit sera source de vie dans la mesure où nous y croirons.

Ce matin, dans son homélie, le Père Regis m’a transporté dans une dimension nouvelle. Il parlait de ce don d’amour que nous offre son Seigneur et qui se fécond dans sa transmission. Le sacrifice de Jésus sur la Croix était bien un don d’amour gratuit de lui pour nous sauver n’est ce pas ? Et si chaque récipiendaire en le recevant ce don gratuit me met à transmettre a leur tour  ce don entièrement ou une infime partie à son voisin et ainsi de suite ? En peu de temps, nous aurions vu une floraison infinie d’amour dans tout  l’univers ?

Mon esprit s’évada pour un moment. J’ai vu dans mon imagination, une multitude de petites lumières d’amour propagées par des connexions faites par cette multitude d’êtres voulant  partager leur amour reçu. N’est ce pas cela déjà la béatitude du paradis ?

Trinh était à Maurice le 29 & 30 mai. C’était un grand plaisir de le revoir au Hilton pendant une bonne heure en compagnie de mon ami Marcel qui avait organisé la dernière visite de l’illustre Astrophysicien chez nous.

Qui est Trinh Xuan Thuan ?

Il est professeur d’astrophysique à l’Université de Virginie aux états unis et est spécialisé dans l’extragalactique. Il est surtout un écrivain de langue française, très lu pour un scientifique qui vulgarise l’astrophysique avec un relent de spiritualité bouddhisme. Parmi ses écrits :

Il était en route pour une série de conférences pendant les vacances scolaires. La semaine dernière il était au festival de Fez au Maroc ou se tenait une colloque sur l’interreligieux. Durant tout l’été de l’hémisphère du nord il animera des colloques et conférences avant de prendre un peu de vacances dans son pays d’origine, le Vietnam.

Depuis notre dernière rencontre, Trinh avoue qu’en matière Astronomie, les dernières recherches confirment l’expansion galactique car il y a une théorie qui prône que par l’attraction l’expansion du Big Bang pourrait se ralentir.  Je garde en souvenir les paroles dites, d’un regard rêveur toute aussi bien en grande paix: ( je paraphrase ici) le monde des infiniment petits et le monde des infiniment grands nous transportent dans une béatitude inouïe vers notre voie pour un  éveil de l’esprit créateur.

Au terme de nos conversations, je dois dire mon admiration accrue pour la manière dont le bouddhisme analyse
le monde des phénomènes. Il l’a fait de façon profonde et originale. Mais le but ultime de la science et du
bouddhisme n’est pas le même. La science s’arrête à l’étude et l’interprétation des phénomènes, alors que pour le
bouddhisme, le but est thérapeutique. En comprenant la vraie nature du monde physique, nous pouvons nous
libérer de la souffrance engendrée par notre attachement erroné à la réalité apparente du monde extérieur et

Times seem difficult these days. We may be in recession but definitely business is getting tougher in most sectors. The turnovers are decreasing whilst the costs are increasing. I had a chat this week with my cousin who looks after gas distribution. Bottle gas is supposed to be a commodity that is most resilient to drop in consumption- the people need to use energy for cooking. It looks that even in this sector there is a lull in spite of the subsidies fed by the government to alleviate the burden of the population. On the other hand, operating the distribution is costing more with the escalating cost of Diesel and  with the mandatory increases to be allotted to the work force.

What are the possible solutions in this juncture?

Costs cutting will some say! Work smarter will others vouch! Indeed whilst increasing sales or turnover seems less likely, squeezing the costs is obvious. It is more easily said than actually implementing the cost squeezing strategies. Reducing the level of costs with the least pain and to work on the optimum means going through the costs elements, analysing them and determining the right level. I rather work on the elimination of waste. I recall during my past career that in some department when we were faced the need to increase our productivity, we utilised lean management techniques and Gemba Kaizen.

Lean Management I believe stems from Lean production systems. Lean production systems provide principles and practices to reduce costs through the relentlessly removal of wastes and the simplification of all processes. The introduction of Gemba Kaizen, particularly the 5 S I am pretty sure will provide some solutions. Sort, Straighten, Sweep, standardize and self discipline are the key words.

Let us all be reminded the vast campaign led a couple of years ago by the National Productivity Council NPCC: the Elimination of Muda.

I was moved by the speech which I watched on direct transmission from the BBC yesterday. The 55 minutes address from Al-Azhar, the Islamic learning institution was eloquently delivered but more importantly it showed the sincerity of the person of Obama. He gave in straight manner his reading of the situation of the Muslim World and proposed peaceful paths to living in harmony with the whole of humanity. He definitely clarifies the position of the United States on the hot issues: Israel and the Palestine, nuclear arms, Women liberty, occupation of Iraq, war in Afghanistan.

As a toastmaster, I am reviewing his speech, available on several sites on the web, and take lessons in speech craft. Reading his transcript, I found , is  a better way of studying Obama’s  rhetoric art. From the numerous appropriate citation, namely of the Koran, Obama and his team must have worked diligently there on.

As a world citizen, I can only rejoice am be delighted to hear a peace maker. He has put in persepective the present world view of Islam and the crude stereo types proponed  by a great number of persons in the west which is not conducive to greater peace and harmony.

I only wish and pray his words are transformed in deeds and that his words are taken by his administration.

Since I last visit to Egypt, 12 years ago, I had since a soft spot for this country which could be considered as a moderate Arab state with a rich history. Choosing Egypt to address the Muslim world is very appropriate for the President of the US. Do you know that Egypt Arab is the standard Arab just as BBC English would be the world Standard English?

Should I find interesting lessons from my studies from the angle of speech writing I shall share them to you in due course. Mean while I advise you to listen to this speech which gave me so much pleasure.

The last fortnight, I attended a talk on Geo politics by a distinguished and knowledgeable professor from the world reputable French school HEC. Demographics obviously became part of the main topic. The anguish of some European countries is the aging of the population and the low birth rate of  nations which would endanger the future of the respective countries.

We discussed lengthily on the progression of some ethnic groups who will impact France in the near future. 2025 Forecasts of nations like Germany and Italy give a decreasing population. The economic impact of these nations will be affected. Countries having today a birth rate below 2 per head will in a very short time be in diminishing population. You could image the impact on the economy, on the social aspects, the geopolitical might and more importantly on the vitality of the country with an ageing population.

Immigration policy and laws then is one of the tools which economical rich countries may use to resolve the issue of demographics. The United States of America, a nation of 300 million inhabitants is vibrant today which was created out of thinking and implementation of strategies. As recently as 80 years ago, when immigration was free in the US, the leaders of the time passed in 1924 a discriminatory immigration law to control their population growth. By way of the 1965 Immigration and nationality act the US is still controlling the growth of the population and the quality of the population.

This is the case for the European union of nations which is not a single nation will a common policy. Immigration in the Schengen area is in havoc with the different policies of the different countries. Immigration is an issue and the integration of the various factions is yet another issue. Many European nations fear unrest in parts of Europe caused by sudden change in social balances. Is there an invisible hand playing on the chess board of Europe in this respect?

We know for sure that the immigrations flow of today determine the state of the nation of tomorrow. As easy demonstrated in our laboratory small Mauritius, the acts of the later part of the 1800 have determined the population of our island.

What should be the immigration and nationality policy of our country? Is it done in thinking of the future generation? Are we thinking of ethnic, religious, racial balances as was the case of the US in 1924?

The next country I am reading on is the country of Fujimori.

Peru is an epic fantasyland. Imagine forgotten temples entangled in jungle vines, cobwebbed imperial tombs baking in the desert sun and ancient bejeweled treasures beyond reckoning. Wild rivers that rage around, pumas that prowl in the night and hallucinogenic shaman rituals that are centuries old. Or step off the beaten path and groove to Afro-Peruvian beats during Carnaval, float in a slow boat down the Amazon and chase that perfect wave along a paradisiacal Pacific coastline.

Almost like a continent in miniature, Peru will astound you with its diversity, from its countless indigenous peoples, languages and traditions to its rainbow variety of wildlife. Whether it’s your first trip to South America or your fiftieth, Peru is the perfect launchpad. Travel however and wherever the spirit moves you – a luxury lodge in the Amazon, cheap ceviche (raw seafood marinated in lime juice) at a beachfront café or a panoramic train ride through the Andes – because it’s all surprisingly affordable.

How much would it be able to see in 3 days?

Barrio Chino

Barrio Chino is the China town in Lima, also called Barrio Chino de Lima.

Peru has the largest Chinese community in South America.

I am in great preparation of this South American trip I am undertaking. Visiting places is a way of improving our knowledge. Whilst yesterday I mentioned ‘seeing is believing’, I could add today, that ‘seeing is knowing’ too. Countries that I shall visit for the first time are: Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Mexico. I am amazed at the size of the country but more impressive is its latitude span. Having such geographical latitude the variety of the bio diversity is immense.

My visit to Chile is too brief to really know the country but at least I am hopeful to have a good glimpse. A country with a coastal line of over 4000 kilometres from the South Pole towards Peru in the latitude 20 bordered by the high altitude Andes which is only 175 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean coast line surely yields an exceptional diversity. It is as if in a same country you would have the climatic and condition of the whole world.

I am so thrilled to dig into my reading…. No wonder Chile is able to produce excellent wine.

Jn 20,19-31.
Ce même soir, le premier jour de la semaine, les disciples avaient
verrouillé les portes du lieu où ils étaient, car ils avaient peur des
Juifs. Jésus vint, et il était là au milieu d’eux. Il leur dit : « La paix
soit avec vous ! »
Après cette parole, il leur montra ses mains et son côté. Les disciples
furent remplis de joie en voyant le Seigneur.
Jésus leur dit de nouveau : « La paix soit avec vous ! De même que le Père
m’a envoyé, moi aussi, je vous envoie. »
Ayant ainsi parlé, il répandit sur eux son souffle et il leur dit : «
Recevez l’Esprit Saint.
Tout homme à qui vous remettrez ses péchés, ils lui seront remis ; tout
homme à qui vous maintiendrez ses péchés, ils lui seront maintenus. »
Or, l’un des Douze, Thomas (dont le nom signifie : Jumeau) n’était pas avec
eux quand Jésus était venu.
Les autres disciples lui disaient : « Nous avons vu le Seigneur ! » Mais il
leur déclara : « Si je ne vois pas dans ses mains la marque des clous, si
je ne mets pas mon doigt à l’endroit des clous, si je ne mets pas la main
dans son côté, non, je ne croirai pas ! »
Huit jours plus tard, les disciples se trouvaient de nouveau dans la
maison, et Thomas était avec eux. Jésus vient, alors que les portes étaient
verrouillées, et il était là au milieu d’eux. Il dit : « La paix soit avec
vous ! »
Puis il dit à Thomas : « Avance ton doigt ici, et vois mes mains ; avance
ta main, et mets-la dans mon côté : cesse d’être incrédule, sois croyant. »

Thomas lui dit alors : « Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu ! »
Jésus lui dit : « Parce que tu m’as vu, tu crois. Heureux ceux qui croient
sans avoir vu. »
Il y a encore beaucoup d’autres signes que Jésus a faits en présence des
disciples et qui ne sont pas mis par écrit dans ce livre.
Mais ceux-là y ont été mis afin que vous croyiez que Jésus est le Messie,
le Fils de Dieu, et afin que, par votre foi, vous ayez la vie en son nom.

Bien que l’Evangile du jour me porte à réfléchir sur histoire d’incrédule St. Thomas: la leçon de voir pour croire et la grâce bienheureuse de croire sans voir. Que ce don de la foi nous envahisse. Ma pensée reste en ce moment  sur un texte du Cardinal Newman que j’ai lu la veille. Une Église qui se construit pas dans un éclat ou un feu de paille mais dans la lente transformation de chaque être.  Ainsi chacun de nous est demandé de vivre sa transformation durable a petit feu.

Témoins de la résurrection

On aurait pu s’attendre à ce que notre Seigneur, une fois ressuscité,
se montre au plus grand nombre de gens possible, et surtout à ceux qui
l’avaient crucifié. Tout au contraire, nous voyons par l’histoire qu’il se
manifeste seulement à quelques témoins choisis, et spécialement à ses
disciples immédiats. C’est ce que saint Pierre reconnaît lui-même quand il
déclare : « Dieu l’a ressuscité le troisième jour. Il lui a donné de se
montrer, non pas à tout le peuple, mais seulement à quelques témoins que
Dieu avait choisis d’avance, à nous qui avons mangé et bu avec lui après sa
résurrection » (Ac 10,40-41).

A première vue, cela nous semble étrange. Nous sommes disposés, en
effet, à nous faire de la résurrection une idée bien différente, à nous la
représenter comme une manifestation éclatante et visible de la gloire du
Christ… En nous la figurant ainsi comme un triomphe public, nous sommes
conduits à imaginer la confusion et la terreur qui auraient saisi ses
bourreaux si Jésus s’était présenté vivant devant eux. Mais, remarquons-le,
un tel raisonnement revient à concevoir le Royaume du Christ comme un
royaume de ce monde, ce qui n’est pas juste. Ce serait nous représenter le
Christ comme étant déjà venu à ce moment-là juger le monde, ce qui
n’arrivera qu’au dernier jour…

Pourquoi se montrer seulement « à quelques témoins choisis d’avance »
? Parce que c’était le moyen le plus efficace de propager la foi dans le
monde entier… Quel aurait été le fruit d’une manifestation publique qui
s’impose à tous ? Ce nouveau miracle aurait laissé la foule telle qu’il
l’avait trouvée, sans changement efficace. Déjà ses anciens miracles
n’avaient pas convaincu tout le monde…; qu’auraient-ils pu dire et sentir
de plus qu’auparavant, même « si quelqu’un ressuscite d’entre les morts  »
? (Lc 16,31)… Le Christ se montre pour susciter des témoins de la
résurrection, des ministres de sa parole, les fondateurs de son Eglise.
Comment la foule, avec sa nature changeante, aurait-elle pu le devenir ?
